So join us for some holiday cheer!

New York Sheep and Wool Festival 2013

For the fifth year in a row, Patricia's Yarns chartered a bus to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival held annually in Rhinebeck, NY.  I love this trip!  It is always fun to have an adventure, see all of the gorgeous wool, and yes, see the lovely animals that provide all of our incredible fiber.  Not to mention, I get a chance to catch up with many of my favorite knitters (including author Ysolda Teague, Lorna's Laces owner Beth Casey [both pictured]), customers, and friends (hooray, tentenknits was there!).  Here are a few of my favorite pictures from this year's trip.  Knit, Crochet, Create!

Autumn Colors

This time of year always makes my knitting energy surge. Maybe it's the cooler temps or the leaves changing color, but probably it's the new fall yarns arriving daily!  We have so many new exciting yarns and I am thrilled with all of them (I know you will be too!).

First, Shibui Baby Alpaca DK - it comes in gorgeous 100gram hanks and is made of the softest baby alpaca.

Next is Shibui Pebble - a fantastic blend of wool, silk and cashmere. The tweed effect is distinctive and it is oh-so soft to the touch.

MadelineTosh has delivered so many gorgeous hand-painted yarns in Merino light, Merino DK and Pashmina. Each hank is more colorful than the next!

Made From the Mountain has delivered us  undeniably soft hand spun cashmere from Afghanistan. It comes in four natural colors and begs to be knit up for something close to the skin.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we are very excited for our 5th annual bus trip to Rhinebeck for the NY Sheep and Wool Festival. There are still seats available if you would like to join! Call the shop for details.

Another classic from Churchmouse

Churchmouse Yarns and Teas publishes beautiful patterns that are timeless and classic in style. We sell their patterns and have quite a few samples knit up in the shop.

For my trip to TNNA in Ohio, I chose to knit Annabella's Cowl out of Koigu KPPPM and Shibui Silk Cloud. It was perfect travel knitting - and so lovely to work with as the Silk Cloud is amazingly soft.

I recently finished.  This  project is another great example of why blocking is so important. Here is the before:

during:

and after:

I am really pleased with how it came out. The color is beautiful and this cowl couldn't be softer.

The blocking process truly is magical; the stitches relax and fall into place making for a gorgeous finished piece.

To block, I fill my sink with cool water, add a teaspoon of Soak wash, submerge my knitted piece, and squish it around a bit to make sure it is saturated. I let it sit for 15 minutes, drain the sink, squeeze out excess water, roll it up in a towel to get out more water, then lay flat to dry. Sometimes I use blocking wires to help maintain straight edges but this time I only needed pins. It takes a finished project from nice to gorgeous.

I love this cowl!

New MadelineTosh is in the building...

I am so thrilled to have a fresh new box of MadelineTosh. This time I added a new yarn base, Pashmina to the Merino Light order in the gorgeous colorways that Madeline Tosh is famous for.

Stop by and see for yourself. The depth of color is so unique and gorgeous. The Pashmina is so soft and luxurious it begs to be worn next to the skin. I cannot wait to cast on with it!

TNNA 2013: A Huge Success

Stitchers from all over descended upon Columbus Ohio this past weekend for the summer TNNA needlearts market to shop for new products, get inspired and see friends old and new. It was a huge success.

When walking the show floor frequently people ask if you have found anything new and exciting. As this is my tenth show there is a lot that I have seen before - with many new booths sprinkled in.  I find it all exciting.

One of my first stops is Lorna's Laces to say hello to Beth & Michael.  Their yarns are a staple in the shop fall lineup. Shepherd Worsted is a wonderful machine washable wool that is hand dyed and lovely.  I am also very excited for their new yarn, Haymarket, which is 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool. It is so very soft and in Lorna's colors- amazing.

I was very excited when I was walking down the 1000 aisle and ran into Lesley Scanlon who is the amazingly creative mind behind Mac & Me.  She was displaying her new patterns, all classic designs with a modern twist.  I was so happy to catch up with her and place an order for the shop.

The Koigu booth is always full of buzz and excitement.  We picked through their hundreds of colors deciding what stayed and what didn't (this is never easy.  I love it all!).  Below is the beginning of the process...

Wow, I love Koigu!

The show wouldn't be complete without seeing some favorite knitwear designers.  The cherry on top was visiting with Ysolda Teague. We talked about her designs, her new book, and even got some new tips for casting-on toys! She is such a nice person to chat with and I am so excited to work with her distributor, Crafty Diversions.

With all that in mind I still have quite a few surprises up my sleeves for fall.  I cannot wait to share them with you.

Ohio here we come!

Fall market time is here and I am so excited to be heading back to Columbus, Ohio for TNNA, The National Needle Arts trade show.

One item on the checklist is a 'social' knitting project.  I am currently participating in the Meadow KAL (knit a-long) with Kelbourne Woolens (Fibre Co.) but the next clue comes Saturday and I am traveling on Friday so I need a project.

I have decided on Annabella's Cowl, a Churchmouse pattern. I am using KPPPM from Koigu held with Silk Cloud from Shibui. It is a beautiful cowl and simple enough that I can talk and knit.

Happy knitting!

Manos del Uruguay & Maxima

Manos del Uruguay is a wonderful company that is both a woman's cooperative and a member of the World Fair Trade Organization - not to mention they are a producer of gorgeous yarns! A shop favorite, Manos Maxima is a yarn that is quickly gaining in popularity with both knitters and crocheters.  It is an extremely soft hand-spun merino wool with an ever expanding color palette - those strikingly beautiful colors that made Manos famous.

A fantastic infinity cowl that will keep you warm on these windy days is the Shocking Seed Stitch Cowl. Knit out of 3 skeins of the main color and 1 contrasting it makes for a very cozy accessory.

We love Maxima so much, we knit our charity blanket out of it! The blanket pattern is The Four Seasons Throw designed by Judith Shangold.  We have the yarn and the pattern booklet available at the shop.

By the way, there is still time to get a raffle ticket for a chance to win!    The raffle will be held on Saturday March 30th - we will choose one lucky person's ticket who will be the new owner of this fantastic, cozy, warm, and wonderful hand knit blanket.  Tickets are $5 - All proceeds benefit the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.

Charity Knitting

Knitting something for another person is always special, but when you are knitting something that will benefit the community it becomes exceptional.  For the third time, friends of Patricia's Yarns worked together to make a beautiful blanket.  The project kicked off at Grimaldi's Pizza (Second and Clinton Streets) with a fun night of knitting and pizza.  Each person knit one square.

The blocks were returned, blocked, and sewn together. The finished result is a gorgeous and soft blanket made with love.   The blanket is made from 20 skeins of Manos Maxima and the Four Seasons Throw pattern by Judith Shanghold (please note, permission was given from Judith to make the blanket).

You can buy tickets to win the blanket at Patricia's Yarns ($5 each or 5 for $20).  All proceeds benefit the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.  Manos Maxima and the Four Seasons Throw pattern are also available at the shop.

Happy Knitting!

What to Knit When You're Expecting

Nikki Van De Car is a Jersey City resident and an avid knitter. She has kept her blog titled "What to Knit When You're Expecting" since 2008 and recently completed her first pattern book under the same title.

On Saturday Nikki spent the afternoon with us signing books and teaching a class on one of the projects in the book, the chickadee hat.

It was a great afternoon with lots of laughs and knitting inspiration. Every knitter in the class learned something new and has a chickadee hat started with all the challenging steps behind them.

I look forward to seeing the completed hats from this talented group of knitters.

Thank you very much to Nikki for bringing your talents to Patricia's Yarns. We look forward to working with her again soon!
